Ben Mensah

Engineering Solutions Advisor

Benjamin A. Mensah Process Engineer with a degree from the Technical University of Berlin, with academic credentials further aligned to Canadian engineering standards through advanced studies at the University of Alberta. Brings extensive experience supporting large-scale energy and industrial projects, with a focus on process optimization, system reliability, regulatory compliance, and execution excellence across the project lifecycle. Contributed to major capital projects, including a large-scale expansion that increased synthetic crude oil production capacity from 200,000 to 350,000 barrels per day. Supported the construction and commissioning of an emissions reduction facility focused on flue gas treatment, improving environmental performance and compliance with evolving regulatory requirements.

As a Process Coordinator, led field execution and construction oversight for multi-disciplinary teams of 70–100 contractors, ensuring alignment with engineering design, project specifications, and construction work packages. Performed pre-permit validation for piping systems, verifying installation readiness, constructability, and compliance with issued-for construction (IFC) drawings, P&IDs, and piping specifications. Ensured correct material selection in accordance with ASME Section II Part A, including service classification, corrosion allowances, and design pressure/temperature envelopes. Maintained strong working knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including ASME Section VIII Division 1 (pressure vessels), ASME B31.3 (process piping), ASME B16, and awareness of ASME B31.1 applications. Acted as a key interface between engineering, construction, and quality teams to ensure installation integrity and code compliance. Championed a safety-first culture through strict adherence to permit-to-work systems, hazard assessments, and field-level risk mitigation.

Ensured comprehensive documentation of installation activities, field changes, and deviations to support accurate as-built P&IDs and asset lifecycle records. Brings additional commercial and strategic perspective from experience as Technical Director in an oil trading environment, with insight into global crude markets, supply-demand dynamics, and geopolitical risk factors influencing pricing. Applies this perspective to engineering decision making, emphasizing cost efficiency, asset utilization, and long-term operational planning. Conducted comparative analysis across refinery operations to identify opportunities for margin improvement, unit availability optimization, turnaround efficiency, and overall asset performance enhancement. Additionally, as former Technical Director for oil trading company, he brings energy sector thought leadership experience through published analysis on global oil markets, clean energy transitions, and nuclear energy.
